I'm Back! Life is Good Again!

Sometimes things happen in your life to make you realize that your perfect world is not so perfect after all.  It takes you to the depths of despair and hopelessness and forces you to reevaluate what's really important in life.  After 2 years of hiding, I have a new appreciation of all that is a part of my life.  Relationships are more precious, my home and surroundings have a renewed beauty, and I am more grateful for all of God's creations.  Because of this I am ready to go back to my "Roots & Wings"!!!

Twelve years ago I started Roots & Wings as a business to design gardens and memorials to our loved ones who have passed from this earth.  Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a beloved pet.  My mama suffered from Alzheimers for 15 years.  Her and my father lived in Montana up in the mountains and her pet rock was a great comfort to her.  She would put moss and plant flowers on it and even talked to it.  She spent a lot of time gardening on her rock.  After she passed away, we moved the rock to where we lived 6 hours away.

After living in that home for 4 years with my mama's rock on the property, we sold our home and moved to Utah because of a job change.  One of my hopes was that someday we would have my mama's rock home with us again.  Seven years after being in Utah my family surprised me for my birthday this past October 10th by bringing my mama's rock home!!!

I was excited to be able to finally start her memorial.  I began with a few of her favorite things...her favorite flowers were roses, but she could never grow them in Montana. She loved hens & chicks, moss, and rocks.  Two weeks ago when I went out to look at the rock, I was shocked to see that some of the original hens & chicks that she had planted twenty years ago, were growing back!!!

Originally, there was also a little pine tree growing in the middle, but unfortunately in our 7 year absence the tree had died...but I believe in miracles...maybe one day!

I am excited to be able to help you create a memorial garden that will bring memories and joy to your heart of your loved one that will last a lifetime.

Love, laughter and smiles,
Fran

Valentine's Day Surprises!

Last year we had some of our cheerful cherubs over to make a valentines gift for their mom and dad.  They loved it so much we decided to do it again this year!

My sweet man cut out the little houses and then the cherubs painted and decorated them!
Little Ryker was feeling a little sad, not sure why :(

But the girls were being silly making funny faces!  Their mommy and daddy loved their little houses
and thought they were a fun surprise!

Here We are posing in sledding best!

Even my sweet man enjoyed coming down a few times!  I decided to stay close to the stove to keep the chili from burning and stirring the hot cocoa!

Soo sweet! Arista and Jayden taking a break and getting warm around the fire!

Tail gating at it's finest!  Another new tradition is born!

The Circus comes to town!

I don't ever remember going to the circus when I was a kid, I don't even remember it ever coming to our town!  I'm sure it did but I sure never heard about it and even if I had I don't know if I would have wanted to go since we seamed to always have our own circus!  We had a small farm with lots of sheep, goats, pigs, (not for long thank goodness)  my horse, Prince, a couple of dogs and a parakeet!  I don't know what kind of a horse Prince  was but he was bigger than a Shetland pony but smaller than a regular horse!  We always had fun with all the animals and my two sisters and I seemed to keep ourselves entertained while our mom and dad were at work!  One day we got the bright idea to bring our two Pygmy goats in the house!! We took them in our room and let them jump from bed to bed!  Another time we brought the horse in the house for a quick look to see where we lived!!  Don't ask me what possessed us to do that but looking back we must of had the cleanest animals because they didn't even track in the house!!  My mom and dad never knew till years later as most parents do, right kids!!

I remember taking our kids to the circus when we lived in Bozeman, Mt.  It was a blustery cold spring day but sooo much fun.  They had all the regular circus acts, elephants, tigers, clowns and Aeriel acts.  And of course the cotton candy, peanuts and popcorn.  I remember all the kids were mesmerized by it all!  That was a long time ago, probably 20+ years ago!!!

Well boy how things have changed!  Well I guess not sooo much in the sense that they have all the same acts and animals as before but some of the acts I thought were a little on the suggestive side!!  It was quite comical to watch dads who were so taken with some of the female performers that they weren't even paying attention to all their kids were buying!  Just give them more money so they would quit bugging them!

All in all it was a fun night with the family and the grand kids loved getting to see all the fun animals, they even got to ride some!

Look at those sweet cherub faces!

Only Trynitee and Jayden would ride the elephant!

Ryker and Aubs decided to play it safe!

The cousins are always happy when they get to spend time together!  Till our next adventure with the cheerful cherubs,

My princess bed!!!

Have I told you how wonderful my sweet man is??
I didn't think so, ha ha!!  Well let me tell you just how wonderful he is!  When I moved to Utah 5 years ago, my sweet man had already been here for 2 years working and living in the house we now call " our own little cottage".  Well we had furnished it with furniture we had found at yard sales!  You know me always looking for those hidden treasures to give a new life and a home!!  Many of the pieces were darker but he loved them and this was his home in Utah where he worked and I was only going to be here on visits!!  That was the original plan!  We already had our dream home in Montana that  we would  live in forever and our kids and grand kids could come and visit and there was room for all!! And life was perfect, so I thought,  Well that plan needed to be changed because what we hadn't planned for was my sweet man falling in love with this amazing valley! With me kicking and screaming we sold our dream home and I moved to his beloved little Heber Valley! All our furniture went into storage since it wouldn't fit in our little cottage, ( 5,000 sq ft. to1,500 sq. ft.).  The furniture in the cottage was dark and  of course I'm allergic to dark!  Over the past 5 years I have slowly lightened up the house and my sweet man has just loved each change! We hope someday to add on and I know it will happen but in the meantime we lighten and change things up with paint!(remember the cupboards?)

                                                             Here's today's projects;

Our nightstands,

and headboard! I've been dieing to do these and my sweet man is in Nevada so what better time!

Surprise!

Our little granddaughters call it our princess bed!!  And my sweet man just smiles, oh yes he is wonderful! And yes life is perfect now, sharing this lovely valley with the man I love, what more could I ask for!

Fun and games with the grandkids!

I can hardly believe it is the last week in January!  We try to have our grand kids down to spend the night and have a fun day every so often and this day we made snow people!

Trynitee made hers with blonde hair to match hers, so beautiful!

Aubree's has curly hair!  I wish I had curly hair!

Here's our little man Ryker always being a clown!!

After the snow people we came in to make dinner, little pizzas, and Ryker helped to make each one!
He spread the flour on the board,

patted  his little ball of dough with flour,

started to roll it out,

checking it! So professional!

Born pizza maker!!! Notice how focused he is throughout the process!
Sorry I didn't get pics of the finished product but trust me they were delicious!

We also got to have our grandson Jayden for an evening so before we picked up Arista (our granddaughter) from work we got in a game of checkers, Jaydens favorite game with Grammy! He has been playing checkers since he was about 5 and he wins every time!

He's going in for the kill!  Notice his phone has not left his hand!  He was texting his uncle Reed in Montana telling him how bad I was losing!  Brings back memories of summer vacations at my Grandpa Franks house!  When all the work was done for the day,( he had a huge garden, 5 acres of melons, chili peppers, tomatoes, that we would go and trade with the indians)!!!  Well that's another story for another time!! Getting back to checkers, we would come in and get cleaned up for dinner and after the kitchen was cleaned up we would sit down and play checkers out on the front screened in porch where my grandma's wringer washer sat off to the side, oh how I loved wash day! I can still hear the crickets and katydids(i think that is what those little critters were called)  and smell the wet earth smell from the Rio Grand River that ran behind my Grandpas farm.  I can  hear my grandma Fefa (her name was Josephine but when I was a baby I couldn't say Josephine so she became Fefa) telling him in spanish that he was so mean for never letting me win!  His reply was always, "she's got to learn for herself,  life won't always be handed to her!"  Oh how true, thank you grandpa for all the beautiful memories and life lessons I learned from you at your side those wonderful summers!!  I used to always tell my grandpa I was going to marry him someday, he was such a simple gentle and kind man and my sweet man is so much like him!  I think life is wonderful, it has it's challenging times but it's all good when you get to see the world through the eyes of a child and help to create those memories that will last a lifetime!

Our Miracles Babies!!

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY RUEBEN JOHN AND REED JESSE!!!

28 years ago today our sons Rueben and Reed made their surprise appearance into the world!  Born at 10:15 and 10:18 am in Missoula, Mt,  two months early!!  But let me start at the beginning:
Grab a cup of tea and get ready for a miracle story!!

My sweet man is a twin  and from the very beginning I wanted to have twins!  I know most women are overwhelmed by one baby let alone to want to have two!  My father always said about me, "no brain no pain" and I agree with him to some extent!  I married young and was sooo in love I thought nothing was impossible and love conquered all!!  I still feel the same way 42 years later!!

We have 7 children, I always wanted 13 because my grandma Cita (my fathers' mother) had 12 and I wanted one more than her but after 7 my sweet man thought we had just the right amount!!  We were blessed with  3 children in the first 4 years of our marriage and then 9 years later thinking we might not have anymore we were blessed with a son who when he was delivered they discovered he had a twin who did not develop properly!  Well I was so excited to have a son but very sad to think I almost had my twins.  God always knows best and never sends us more than we can handle and  He knew I was going to have my hands full with just Ryan and boy did I ever!  Well about a year and a half later when I realized I was pregnant again I couldn't help but wish It might be twins  but of course I knew that was not likely to happen again.  I suffered from morning sickness early on and seamed bigger than usual, though I had felt as big with Ryan and kept telling the doctor and he would just laugh at me and say, " it's all in your mind because you want twins so bad".  Well I wasn't about to say anything this time but I would always tell him I felt so much bigger and he would assure me that, that usually happens the more pregnancies you have!

Well when I went in for my check up on Dec. 22 I had my oldest daughter(Taryn) with me and we were going to do some cloths shopping for her after the checkup.  I had promised her this for sometime so we were really excited to have a mommy daughter day!  I was laying on the checkup table when Dr. Pitt walked in and took one look at me and gasped,  "what has happened to your belly"!!  I told him I kept trying to tell him I felt my belly was too big!

Well they made me drink a ton of water and I couldn't go to the bathroom,  I had to hold it till they did the sonogram.  And to my surprise there they were,  Baby A and Baby B as they referred to them!!  My head was swimming, was I in a dream, Taryn was crying because she didn't think we were going to go shopping any more!!  Well I finally got to go to the bathroom, all that water in my bladder was soooo painful!  They gave me the pictures of Baby A and Baby B, what beautiful little miracles, I had never seen pictures like this before! Now days you get almost a whole album of pictures before they're born!

We did go shopping and even went to lunch, the whole day just felt like a  blurry dream!  And of course that was before cell phones so I couldn't call my sweet man with the news.  When we finally got home he was out hanging Christmas lights on the front of the house and asked how my appointment went! Little did he know the news that was about to change bless his life forever!!  He was on a ladder so I told him to come down and I would show him the picture they took, I gave him the first picture and he was so amazed to see  our sweet little baby but when I brought out the second picture I thought he was going to faint!  Tears immediatly filled his eyes!

Everyone was so excited as we called all of our friends and families but my mother and father in-law were probably the most excited because they  knew the joys of having twins and were about to relive their days with their twins!  We did not know the gender of our twins because of the way they were positioned, they were both breech!  We found this out  Friday Jan. 10th.  I had gone in for a check up and another sonogram.    I had also been having some mild contractions and  Dr. Pitt was concerned that  they could come early so he wanted to give me a shot the following week to help their lungs start to develope quicker in case they did and told me that we should consider having them cesarian because of the way they were positioned we could loose one or both!

Sunday night about midnight my sweet man had left for work, he had a milk hauling business where he went to the dairies and picked up milk in the Flathead Valley where we lived in Montana.  As soon as he left I had my first contraction and I knew I was in big trouble!  I called a dear friend of mine Penny Atkins, who was a nurse and she came over and checked me.  She was concerned so she called Dr. Pitt who told her to bring me in! Remember there's no cell phones so I couldn't call my sweet man to come home and take me to the hospital!   Well the hospital was an hour away and it was a very foggy January night, by now it was about 1am.  In our church ( Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) we have what is called Home Teachers.  They are two men who are assigned to your family and once a month they come to your home with a lesson and just make sure all is well in your family.  Since my husband wasn't home to give me a blessing before I went  I decided to call our home teachers,  Bruce Papenfuss and Bert Harris who were at our home in a matter of minutes.  They gave me a blessing of comfort and told me all would be well, that our babies would be safe and healthy!  Up until that point I had been a nervous wreck but a peace washed over me that yes all would be well!

Bruce drove Penny and I to the hospital.  On the way down we passed my  sweet man on the road and tried to flash him down.  He saw us but did not recognize the car and thought it was just some drunks on the side of the road and went on his merry way!!   They admitted me and started giving me something to stop the contractions.  Penny stayed with me all morning letting me know all would be well.  It  felt like the babies were kicking me in the rear and later Penny told me she was afraid the medicine was not helping and  the babies were going to be born inspite of the medicine they were giving me.  Well sure enough when Dr. Pitt showed up a little before 10:00 am and checked me he said "looks like we're having some babies"!!  I told him we had decided to have them cesarean but he said they were to far down in the birth canal for that.  I was so worried but than I remembered the blessing I was given and felt a peace and calmness in my heart!  Rueben was born at 10:15,  behind first!  Yes folded in half,  4lbs 15oz and Reed was born at 10:18,  feet first and 4lbs. 15 1/2 oz!! Perfect in every way, even their lungs!  The Drs. were all amazed.  The nurse came in and said " I can't beleive your  husband slept through the whole thing!!  Bruce Papenfuss had been in the waiting room the whole time waiting to make sure we were ok!  I assured her he was no my husband but a dear friend who wanted to make sure we were ok!  Bruce  passed away this last November, thank you my dear friend for your service to our family helping our boys to be born safely.  And Penny my sweet friend who has lost two of her boys, thank you for staying at my side and being there for the birth of our two little miracles!!

Here they are snoozing!  Reed has his arm around Rueben!
They are two days old!

Here is Rueben with his girlfriend Madi at the NFR making memories and traditions!

And Reed (on the right) with his partner Ty.  We have so much to be grateful for, two miracles that were born into our family to bless our lives with,

                                                           Love, Laughter and Smiles,
